did i mention i saw Pirates 2 with Matt and Emily last friday? fun times, as Matt dressed up like cap'n jack. not a perfect movie, but a very decent middle chapter. plus, Davy Jones and his crew are as cool as all hell. there's no point in writing a full review becuase everyone in the whole world has seen it.

luckily my Project Runway addiction has been staved off for a while. i don't know how much i like this year's designers in comparison to last year yet, but my early favorites are Bonnie, Keith, and Robert. and as always, my true heart belongs to Tim Gunn.

purged at Half Price Books. bought: Middlesex, Choke, and Welcome to the Monkey House. also, Fight Club on dvd. finished Their Eyes Were Watching God. terrible book, no enjoyment found throughout. now just Notes from Underground and my summer reading is over. the first book for pleasure reading will be The Virgin Suicides.

Firefly, the best scifi western and one of my top 5 TV shows ever, had a marathon on the Sci-Fi channel yesterday. happy Kate. constant commercials for "A Scifi Pictures original: Bat Boy VII: Born Again in Bear Creek" unhappy Kate.

used my free monthly rental for what else? The Rocky Horror Picture Show. mostly it was because they had the two disc and i just wanted to see the supplemental documentary and such. mom says i'm obcessed. but i looovvee the music so.

ordered a purse. see how exciting my life is?

the title says mixtapes, but sadlly i have nothing to write about musically. nevermind. Massive Attack is in Chicago and Tool is in Columbus, both of whom i wouldn't mind seeing.

watched an interesting movie on Sundance last night because Dad told me it had a Sisters of Mercy song in it. Head-on won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and the National Film Critic's Best Foreign Film for last year. i really enjoyed it. that's not to say its an easy watch, but the love story at its core made it memorable. Cahit is distraught after his wife's death, so he rams his car into a wall in the hopes of feeling something. at the a mental hospital afterwards, he meets Sibel who also tried to kill herself and is 20 yrs. his junior. in the hopes of escaping her Muslim family, she asks Cahit to marry her. after some prodding, he reluctantly does. what follows is the story of two people whose marriage of convenience leads them into desperate love and an unlikely bond that must stand up to many tribulations. personally, i think this film was wonderful, and can just imagine some idiot trying to remake it as an American film.
the movie, which is in Turkish and subtitled, also deals with cultural clashes amongst Muslims and Turks. don't let that dissuade you, because it doesn't take away from the movie. apparently, there's an unrated version that was opened in the states, but Sundance showed an R rated cut because of strong graphic sexuality, pervasive language, some brutal violence and drug content. i didn't think the sex was all that extreme, although i would be curious to see how the two versions differed.
worthy movie not to be missed that proves romance without a Hollywood agenda can exist without being perfect, and can still break your heart.

i just don't get it...

admittedly, i have a weakness for bad zombie movies, and have watched many of them. some, are good. (Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead 2005, Evil Dead II) and some are a crime against nature (Night of the Living Dead III anyone?) but George Romero's 1978 Dawn of the Dead is supposed the best of them all. so i watched it, as the conclusion of Pulp Month on IFC. i love their Film Fanatic Fridays. anyways, i was totally underimpressed. i do understand how the movie was shocking and revolutionary for its time, but i don't think it holds up very well. the gore looks ok, with most of the blood resembling red paint, but that's understandable. one would think that the zombies could look better then jsut mindless blue creatures, but no. the plot also wore thin in the second act, and except for Ken Foree, who is a badass, the performances were pretty movie of the week. i was disappointed, because i really wanted to like this movie, and i just didn't.

i bought Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest midnight show tickets today. this is becoming a habit with Matt & Emily. i'm excited.

well, first post. let's just jump right in, shall we?

last night was Peaches/Bauhaus/Nine Inch Nails in Columbus. wonderful show. missed Peaches, didn't care. Bauhaus sounded fantastic after 20+ years, and Peter Murphy was on it. a couple times, the way he moved and the way he was lit, all i could think is, "This is The Hunger" and i got to hear "Bela Lugosi's Dead," the all-time great Goth masterpiece, another one to cross off my list. As for NIN, a better show than Cincinnati, more musically tight and better sound quality. they played "Down in It" which i did not get to hear in Cincinnati, and "Get Down Make Love" the Queen cover that they never do. it was a lovely night despite the weather and a nice time with Dad.

oh, and we also ate at bd'S Mongolian Barbeque, the best food in the world.

i think Superman Returns looks wretched and have no plans to see it. Brandon Routh is Superboy, not Superman. but, the Spiderman 3 trailer is decent.

Southland Tales, the second film by Richard Kelly, who made Donnie Darko, is getting a US release thankfully. it was flamed at Cannes as the worst of the festival, and there were rumors of it not getting picked up. even if it sucks, i will still see it because Donnie Darko is a modern masterpiece.

aw, Sleater-Kinney is breaking up. yesssssss. i really cannot stand Corinn Tucker. musically, there'ye a decent band, but her voice is like a cat slowly dying of ebola.

Project Runway season 3 begins in two weeks. (!!!) oh, Tim Gunn, how i missed thee.

in non-media news, i'm kind of worried about Odin's Word next year. selling ads just seems so intimidating, and i worry about us making it work. maybe we can get some guidance at IU's HSJI.
